The ancient Greeks believed that the pomegranate tree sprang from the blood of Dionysus, the god of wine. The fruit was also associated with Persephone who, as a result of eating it, was forced by Pluto to return to the underworld for a third of each year. After this period, she came back to earth, signaling the beginning of spring. The pomegranate thus became a symbol of rejuvenation and eternal life.
